Boys
- Jeans are very important to grunge. Ripping your jeans is acceptable, but not too much! (Ripping them too much will make you look
dumb.) But if you do, consider wearing thermal underwear under it, to keep from freezing. You can also patch your jeans with odd fabrics (plaid, paisley, tie-dye, etc.).
- Listen to grunge music Above-ground grunge includes the big four: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains. Original, more underground bands include Mother Love Bone, Love Battery, Mad Season, Green River, Screaming Trees, Temple of the Dog, Mudhoney, etc. (Knowing underground bands is a must!)
- Buying from thrift stores like value village and Good Will is much better than buying expensive, brand-name clothing, Kurt Cobain only bought second-hand. If you buy pre-ripped jeans for seventy dollars and call yourself grunge, you're a poser.
- Buy Grunge t-shirts with bands like Soundgarden or Nirvana on them, if you know, and like, the band. Also acceptable are underground band shirts.
- Other shirts in clude: white t-shirts you drew on with permanent marker, striped t-shirts, solid t-shirts(earthy, neutral colors), and bar/club/restaurant shirts.
- Dying your hair is great.
- Flannel shirts are acceptable.
- Sunglasses are acceptable as well. Cheap sunglasses from the dollar store are perfect. Any sunglasses will do really, even girl's ones, look at Kurt Cobain!
- Summer can get hot. So get a pair of three quarter jeans, but not too baggy and rip up the ends where the fold is, using a sharp object, burning with a lighter can work too. Long dirty white socks and ripped up black chucks go well with this as well.
- Khaki shorts or cargo shorts was popular by Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam.
- Corduroy was another material Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain wore. The Corduroy Coat was/is grunge.
- Grunge did not care what they wore. They wore whatever. They would get out of bed and wear whatever they were wearing.
- If able to, grow a chin goatee and long sideburns similar to the one Layne Staley had or Scott Weiland had during the 'Core' era. Five o' clock shadow is also acceptable. Layne Staley alsohad many a different beard, so there are many different things you can do. Mustaches aren't really grunge unless it's like a Chris Cornell or Mike Inez one.
- Grunge men to look up: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell, Mark Lanegan, Mark Arm, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, Kurt Cobain, Tad, Scott Weiland.
Girls
- Flannel is acceptable.
- Wearing guys pants is acceptable, but you should be careful about it.
- DO NOT SHOP AT ABERCROMBIE (&Fitch). This is nowhere near grunge, and doing this is supporting commercialized garbage.
- Grow your hair out if you want, or cut it short. Just nothing too fancy.
- Women of grunge to look up: Kat Bjelland, Kathleen Hanna, Donita Sparks, Mia Zapata & more.
Both
- You can listen to the grunge music in the guys section, but the feminine grunge bands are L7, Bikini Kill, OOps! Wrong Hole, Babes in Toyland, etc. That goes for both types.
- Buy stuff from thrift stores and flea markets. Don't buy expensive things because, once again, if you buy pre-ripped jeans for seventy dollars and call yourself grunge, you're a poser.
- Accessories such as beaded necklaces, lanyards, bangles, rubber bracelets are perfect!
- Buy actual CDs, it's cool to have an mp3, but have more CDs (or vinyl). It really adds to the feel of it.
The Attitude
- Don't care what other people think.
- Most "grungers" were rebels. They disliked society and media and didn't trust large firms and corporations.
- Being very "calm" is another thing if someone is annoying you walk AWAY.
- Have respect for other bands (if you're in a band)but always think your band is the best.

Hair as indicator
Healthy hair indicates health and youth (important in evolutionary biology). Hair colour and texture can be a sign of ethnic ancestry. Facial hair is a sign of puberty in men. White hair is a sign of age, which can be concealed with hair dye. A well known old wives' tale often told to children claims that eating a large portion of bread crusts can make hair curly.[citation needed] Male pattern baldness is a sign of age, which can be concealed with a toupee, hats or religious/cultural adornments. In modern times, it can be reversed in some men with minoxidil (marketed as Rogaine or Regaine) or finasteride (marketed as Propecia); see Baldness treatments. Rather than these options, many men simply shave their heads for a clean look. Males in some religious groups, for example Sikhs and Orthodox Jews, may follow certain rules regarding hair as part of their faith, e.g. never cut their hair, or shave some or all of it. Some groups, such as women in the Muslim and orthodox Jewish communities, cover their hair as part of religious observance. Hair whorls have been discovered to be associated with brain development.
Hairstyle can be an indicator of group membership:. Metalheads can often feature long hair for headbanging, although long hair is commonplace for many men and women outside of heavy metal (ex: Indian sadhus, the hippie subculture, etc). Beatle "mop-top" haircuts. Mohawk haircuts, often associated with punk rock and the punk subculture. Skinhead haircuts, where the head is often shaved completely bald, or "buzzed". Mullet hairstyles, which have stereotypically been portrayed as pertaining to rednecks. Deathhawk A larger, fuller, back combed version of a mohawk - popular in the gothic sub-culture, and heavily featured in deathrock and gothic rock bands in the 1980s. undercut where the sides and back of the head are shaved short or bald, and the top hair is allowed to grow long. Common among so-called "cybergoths" and followers of Industrial and heavy electronic music scenes. This is especially true of women in these subcultures, although the undercut is accepted as a unisex hair style. Fascinator (hair style) where the hair is short at the back and long at the front and the front forms itself into a point. It is similar to a mullet in reverse (also known as a frullet) or a devil lock. Hair that is usually short with a long side fringe [American: bangs] is a cut often associated with emo music and its fan basis. It is often dyed black or vibrant and contrasting colours such as pink or blue. It is considered a unisex haircut and often appears similar to the mop-top.
